What is the best way to clean up retired packages?

I need a solution

I found an article on connect that the solution indicated after deleting the policies etc that reference the software release, to go and delete the release not the product and that will delete the package and all.

Doing this I found that it did do this; however, we are in a hierarchy and after replication on the child servers and site servers related to them still have the package and everything.  The policies and task deletion replicated just fine, but for the packages do I need to also manually do the deletion process on the child servers as well as the parent?

I need to clean up disk space on package servers and figured I don't need old retired software.

Also if anyone has a best practice to delete patches so they replicate the deletion that is appreciated as well.
