Possible bug in Software Delivery in 7.5 SP1

I do not need a solution (just sharing information)

I've come to the conclusion after a couple of days of deleting/re-creating packages that there is a bug in Altiris 7.5 Software Delivery. This is the only explanation I can think of when I've created a package over and over again using the same content with no success, and then, by changing the name of one of the files, suddenly everything works as it has for the umpteen other packages I've built.

More details:

  • I wanted to create a "software update" to set some registry keys to point an application at a licence server.
  • I have a file with the keys in called LGO.REG.
  • I create a package containing just this file with the command "regedit.exe /S LGO.REG" to apply it.
  • I set it as a "software update" to the main package.
  • Build a policy to deliver the package complete with the update.

The package makes its way onto the package server, the client picks up the reference to the policy, the client fails detection and is non-compliant, and that's it. It won't download the package and execute it. Tried it on 2 test machines.

I did something similar for another package which had a one line batch file to apply the reg file so I thought I'd try that - didn't help.

Tried adding it as a separate software item in the policy (rather than as an update) - no better.

Tried separating it out into a policy all on its own - same behaviour.

Tried creating another package/policy to see if everything was broken? Worked fine as normal.

Deleted everything, renamed the registry file to "LeicaLicenceServer.reg", rebuilt the package and tried it on its own in a policy - worked!

Re-defined it as an update to the main package and bundled it back into the main policy - still worked.

Unless I've missed something really subtle or obvious, I'd say there's an issue with a package containing a file with the above short name, or perhaps even with a name of that style?

I'm open to the option that I've made a mistake somewhere along the line, but whatever, I've wasted too much time to worry about it any more...

[Platform is 7.5 SP1, running on Server 2008 with one package server also on Server 2008)
